The Quilcom HYPERBEAM: Have a Blast!!

Post by Spogg »

As is often the case someone asked me to have a go at an instrument I’d never heard of before, in this case a “Blaster Beam”.

You can’t buy one for yourself so anyone who wants one has to make it. Craig Huxley’s is built on a 5 meter long girder and has 24 strings all tuned in unison. Electromagnetic pickups and contact mics are the sound source. Other people have made their own variations but the main use is for making deeply pitched and weird sound effects, as heard on Star Trek and other movies.

If you search for Blaster Beam on YouTube you’ll see and hear examples and because there are so many variations and methods of playing and expression I decided this would not be a “SIM”: It’s my personal take on the principle rather than a simulation.

Here’s the download:

And here’s the video:

Very cool...glad you took me up on this! 8-)
I keep a pair of oven mitts next to my computer so I don't get a concussion from slapping my forehead while I'm reading the responses to my questions.

This is totally insane!! Love it! :D
A while ago I challenged people to create the weirdest sound ever. Well, the Quilcom HYPERBEAM clearly wins the contest.

'The Beam' was also heard on the Apocalypse Now soundtrack - Mickey Hart had one; heard on a couple of his Rhythm Devils and Planet Drum albums too.

I was reminded of the Hyperbeam again from this guys old clips... https://www.youtube.com/@pip3guy/videos

Combine techniques from your Hyperbeam and the SIM-DIDGE... to create a "Quilcom Ultrabeam" or maybe "Tractor beam" ;)

Switchable Metal/PVC/Woodpipe-simulation that is capable of continuous excitation (like didge circular breathing) as well as impulse/strike excitation?

Even possible?
(joking of couse... I know you would be able to :P )

An idea for the really rainy days perhaps...

The very wonderful and highly talented Kevin Brown has gifted me with a new GUI for the HYPERBEAM.
This is an additional download with FSM and plugins:

Did you need to fix anything I mucked up in the process?
