What is The Correct Name for This Shape?

Post by DaveyBoy »

The forum has been very quiet recently . . I hope everyone is ok!

Does anyone know the correct geometric name for this shape:

A google search of 'Curved Stadium', 'Curved Obround', 'Curved Arch', 'Bent Sausage' and the like doesn't yield any results, so I thought I'd ask the collective brains of the forum :D

If it doesn't have a proper name then maybe we could give it one!

Cheers in advance

Thick arc (or arch?) with round ends?

I don't know of any simple name for it from geometry, engineering drawing, or machining. It's a kind of convolution - everywhere touched by a circle moved along an arc. If I were machining it, I'd probably say a "radiused arc" - but if someone else said that, I'd want to see a drawing to be sure what they meant!

Spogg's probably your man for that, as he's great at suggestive names for things. I guess it's a bit mean of me to pass him the problem, but from the look of it, it doesn't seem to be too... erm,... hard.
All schematics/modules I post are free for all to use - but a credit is always polite!

Trog . . your humour never fails to amuse :D

Martin . . looks like you are correct, Guyman's suggestion of 'rounded edge arc' does get a few Google results, but is this the correct geometric term?

This is very much a work in progress so if anyone is interested I will update when finished.
I'm just drawing arcs at the moment but I am intending to change to Graphics Paths so they can be filled with colour.

The reason for this project is that I need draw a fan opening/vent for a job at work (it has to be this design) and the drawing program I normally use (Visio) doesn't support auto generation of radial objects (as far as I know), so my plan is to draw it with Flowstone and save as bitmap, which can then be imported to Vsio.

Keep the suggestions coming Guys . . I'm favouring Frankfurter or Sausage at the moment :D

Awesome @Daveyboy !
Forgive the spaghetti string inside the module, just a rush job.
I have more ideas and I'm about to get something to sip on and dive in.

I suppose just drawing an arc segment with a really wide brush and round endcaps is too easy...if you need just the outline, draw a second one slightly shorter/narrower in the background color.

(I'm pretty sure you can do that in Paint and export as a metafile, which Visio should be able to import...certainly works that way in CorelDraw.)
